(Christmas) It Don't Get No Better Than This
CHAD SANDERS
ABOUT THIS SONG
This song was written for Jerry, Lynda, and Karen, and for their Mom and Dad, about the Christmases they shared when the kids were young.
It started with stories from my mother-in-law, Mrs. Betty, about Christmas in their twin house in Warminster, Pennsylvania. Every year the kids were kept up past bedtime, pressed against the window in their pajamas, waiting on Grandmom and Grandpop to ride the train out from Philadelphia through the snow. The girls had their dolls lined up, Jerry had his Hess truck lit up under the tree, and when the headlights finally came around the corner the house filled up with coats, hugs, and snow tracked across the floor.
Then came the part Mrs. Betty remembers most: plates piled high, everybody laughing, Daisy the Keeshond curled up asleep in her lap, and the kids fighting to keep their eyes open. She’d look around at everyone she loved under one roof and say to herself, “It don’t get no better than this.”
Those kids are grown now with families of their own, and Grandmom and Grandpop are long gone. But every time the first snow sticks, those nights come right back. This one is for all of them.
LYRICS
Snow driftin’ down on our cozy twin Porch light on early to welcome ’em in The three kids in pajamas pressed up to the glass Hollerin’ “Is that them?” at each car that passed The girls with dolls all lined in a row Their brother’s toy Hess truck lit up in the glow Last train from Fox Chase crawled through the snow Out to the end of the line, far as it goes Mom salted the steps and she swept ’em off twice Warned all the kids, “Now them steps are like ice” Headlights came round at the end of the street The kids all jumpin’, couldn’t stay on their feet Coats on the bed, snow on the floor Whole family packed in, and still room for more It don’t get no better than this Oh, how much those nights I miss Plates piled high and the oven still warm Laughin’ so loud that it drowned out the storm Daisy curled up on our laps fast asleep Kids’ eyes too heavy to keep Mom looks around at the life that she’s got Every last one in one warm little spot And she says to herself, soft as a wish “It don’t get no better than this” Them kids are all grown with kids of their own Grandmom and Grandpop have long gone home But the first winter night that the snow starts to stay She hears that train whistle from far, far away And she’s back in that twin with the porch light on low Watchin’ the corner through new-fallin’ snow It don’t get no better than this Oh, how much those nights I miss Plates piled high and the oven still warm Laughin’ so loud that it drowned out the storm Daisy curled up in her lap fast asleep Kids’ eyes too heavy to keep She looks around at the life that she’s got Every last one in one warm little spot And she says to herself, soft as a wish “It don’t get no better than this” No, it don’t get no better than this

Fans of country truck song and country Christmas song will find something real in this track, the kind of honest storytelling Chad Sanders is known for across his original catalog.
Chad Sanders writes and records from the perspective of someone rooted in North Alabama, North Alabama specifically, in the heart of Marshall County. His music reflects life as it actually is in small-town America, not as it's packaged for radio.
